The first sail past launched from Jericho Beach may have taken place almost three thousand years ago when original inhabitants of this area set their canoes into the Salish sea and left their village behind to discover, hunt, trade or pillage.

All JSCA members are invited to carry on this longstanding tradition. Sail, paddle, windsurf, row – whatever you like to do here, come out and do it on Saturday, May 12 between Noon and 1600H.

The SOS is important to you to ensure that all of your ocean excursions this season are blessed with favourable weather. The SOS is also an important part of the Jericho OPEN HOUSE as it gives our visiting landlubbers an opportunity to see the Jericho Sailing Centre in action.

On February 15th, the Vancouver Park Board drafted out a new budget proposal. To save funds, it wants to remove lifeguards permanently from Jericho Beach, Spanish Banks West, Spanish Banks Extension, Second Beach, Sunset Beach, and Trout Lake.

This is a SAFETY concern. We believe people WILL drown and are being put at risk in these 6 now unsupervised public beaches.

Read the Georgia Straight article about these proposed budget cuts: http://www.straight.com/article-617656/vancouver/jericho-beach-lifeguards-would-disappear-under-proposed-parkboard-budget-cuts

Comments can be sent to the Park Board at pbcomment@vancouver.ca

Find the online petition at: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/keep-vancouver-lifeguards-on-6-popular-beaches.html

Help us tell the Park Board that putting swimmers at risk at 6 popular beaches is not ok!

The Park Board hearing session for public feedback is on Monday, February 27, at 2099 Beach Ave. The JSCA’s General Manager, Mike Cotter, is scheduled to speak. Hope to see you there!

Jericho Beach Restoration Phase 2 Concept

The final proposed design concept for the Jericho Beach Restoration Phase 2 was presented at a public meeting at Aberthau last Wednesday, December 7. Over 60 members of the public, including many members of the JSCA, attended to ask questions and provide feedback to Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation Planning staff and consultants.
The latest design concept takes into account and respects Jericho’s historic use as Vancouver’s primary marine access park facilitating traffic flow to and from the shore including easy, unobstructed access to the parking lot and the Jericho Sailing Centre, Vancouver’s, non-taxpayer funded, publically accessible, ocean access community centre.

With the continuing growth in popularity of paddlesport recreation in Vancouver, this area will become a favourite destination for many citizens-it will likely be the best paddling beach in Vancouver. We encourage all users of the Jericho Sailing Centre and other interested paddlers, rowers and SUPers to support it by filling out the Park Board survey at the following link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/jerichowharfphase2

Comment submission deadline is December 23rd, 2011.

If the design is received favourably by the public, the newly elected Park Board is likely to approve it in January 2012 with work commencing in the spring. For more complete information on the Jericho Beach Restoration Phase 2 Concept, drift over to:

In order for this to become the best paddling beach in Vancouver the Board of Parks and Recreation must officially designate it for such use in a separate process. More on this in future editions of “In the wind”.

Wednesday, December 7, 6-8pm West Point Grey Community Centre

The Jericho Beach Restoration Phase 2 Public Meeting will take place on Wednesday, December 7 from 6-8pm in the Oak Room of the West Point Grey Community Centre (located on the south side of Marine Drive across from the Discovery Street entrance to Jericho Park).

A sneak peek at the concept revealed a well thought out and naturally balanced seaside park design which easily facilitates small craft entry to and from the sea and could end up being the best paddling beach in Vancouver. We encourage all users of the Jericho Sailing Centre and other interested paddlers, rowers and SUPers to attend the meeting, learn more about the proposed design and support it.

If the design is received favourably by the public, work will commence early in the new year and should be substantially complete in the spring.

In order for this to become the best paddling beach in Vancouver the Board of Parks and Recreation must officially designate it for such use in a separate process. More on this in future editions of “in the wind”.

The drums will be banging a little bit louder than usual on Saturday & Sunday, 29-30th Sept at the Jericho Sailing Centre as the 25th annual “Day of the Longboat” celebrates a centuries old Jericho Beach tradition.

Three thousand years ago original inhabitants of this area plied the waters of the Salish Sea from this shore in cedar canoes with perfect drumbeat rhythm.

More than 3500 modern day Vancouver natives will pick up a paddle (many for the first time) to compete in the UBC Rec Day of the Longboat event. Participants, ranging from novice paddlers to world class paddling athletes, will compete in several divisions.

The paddle is the drumstick of people powered watercraft and, will provide a splashy percussion rhythm off Jericho Beach in harmony with the mountain framed seascape that is Vancouver, as it has been here since the beginning of human time.
