Jericho Beach Restoration Phase 2 Concept

The final proposed design concept for the Jericho Beach Restoration Phase 2 was presented at a public meeting at Aberthau last Wednesday, December 7. Over 60 members of the public, including many members of the JSCA, attended to ask questions and provide feedback to Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation Planning staff and consultants.
The latest design concept takes into account and respects Jericho’s historic use as Vancouver’s primary marine access park facilitating traffic flow to and from the shore including easy, unobstructed access to the parking lot and the Jericho Sailing Centre, Vancouver’s, non-taxpayer funded, publically accessible, ocean access community centre.

With the continuing growth in popularity of paddlesport recreation in Vancouver, this area will become a favourite destination for many citizens-it will likely be the best paddling beach in Vancouver. We encourage all users of the Jericho Sailing Centre and other interested paddlers, rowers and SUPers to support it by filling out the Park Board survey at the following link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/jerichowharfphase2

Comment submission deadline is December 23rd, 2011.

If the design is received favourably by the public, the newly elected Park Board is likely to approve it in January 2012 with work commencing in the spring. For more complete information on the Jericho Beach Restoration Phase 2 Concept, drift over to:

In order for this to become the best paddling beach in Vancouver the Board of Parks and Recreation must officially designate it for such use in a separate process. More on this in future editions of “In the wind”.

The Jericho Beach Restoration Phase 2 Public Meeting will take place on Wednesday, December 7 from 6-8pm in the Oak Room of the West Point Grey Community Centre (located on the south side of Marine Drive across from the Discovery Street entrance to Jericho Park).

A sneak peek at the concept revealed a well thought out and naturally balanced seaside park design which easily facilitates small craft entry to and from the sea and could end up being the best paddling beach in Vancouver. We encourage all users of the Jericho Sailing Centre and other interested paddlers, rowers and SUPers to attend the meeting, learn more about the proposed design and support it.

If the design is received favourably by the public, work will commence early in the new year and should be substantially complete in the spring.

In order for this to become the best paddling beach in Vancouver the Board of Parks and Recreation must officially designate it for such use in a separate process. More on this in future editions of “in the wind”.

The drums will be banging a little bit louder than usual on Saturday & Sunday, 29-30th Sept at the Jericho Sailing Centre as the 25th annual “Day of the Longboat” celebrates a centuries old Jericho Beach tradition.

Three thousand years ago original inhabitants of this area plied the waters of the Salish Sea from this shore in cedar canoes with perfect drumbeat rhythm.

More than 3500 modern day Vancouver natives will pick up a paddle (many for the first time) to compete in the UBC Rec Day of the Longboat event. Participants, ranging from novice paddlers to world class paddling athletes, will compete in several divisions.

The paddle is the drumstick of people powered watercraft and, will provide a splashy percussion rhythm off Jericho Beach in harmony with the mountain framed seascape that is Vancouver, as it has been here since the beginning of human time.

The English Bay Safety Seminar was developed for users of the Jericho Sailing Centre to help keep them safe at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of “sea disasters” over the past 37 years.

Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? Don’t challenge Darwin’s theory; make sure your water safety knowledge is the fittest it can be. Your survival may well depend upon it. Find the missing links and fill in the gaps in your water safety knowledge by attending a FREE English Bay Safety Seminar on Tues, September 13th at 1900H. RSVP ONLY, JSCA office.

When tennis balls reach their fuzz saturation point and fling sprinkler bursts spiraling from their soggy smashing wakes; when hard core golfers don hip waders to navigate their balls through hole water hazards; when jogging shoes slosh in squishy squashy rhythm and grass field users lose all of their traction; when even the most hardened cyclists dread the water ski wake of passing cars; whenever Vancouver gets rinsed by relentless rain, from deep within the very nature of Vancouver, ocean sports swell and rise to the occasion.

At the top of the short list of outdoor recreation lessons that don’t get cancelled in the rain, ocean kayaking, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, skim boarding and stand-up paddling are all at the peak of poor weather high performance. Dressed for the wettest possible conditions, bobbing on the briny, a little precipitation just means you shower as you go.
