New Day, New Membership Year

The sun sets behind Point Grey and with it the 2025-26 JSCA membership year. The new 2026-27 membership year begins with today’s sunrise. The changeover comes with new member keys, wi-fi password and stickers to update your card. See below for more information

The sun sets behind Point Grey and with it the 2025-26 JSCA membership year. The new 2026-27 membership year begins with today’s sunrise. The changeover comes with new member keys, wi-fi password and stickers to update your card. See below for more information.

Now that our new membership year is upon us there are a couple of housekeeping issues to take care of.

New member keys
All the locks have been re-keyed to the new 2026-27 member key. If you use a key to access the ocean gates your old one will no longer work. Feel free to stop by the JSCA office to purchase a new one.

Member waiver and member cards
If you have not already done so, make sure to sign the JSCA liability waiver. This activates your facility access and will assure that your member card continues to open all the doors it is supposed to. Speaking of your card, stop by the JSCA office to get the current year decal applied to your card. The member card decal has this year’s wi-fi password on it. As always, displaying your current member card at the Galley grants you access to the member discount.

Disposal of old boats
Has your craft spent its last day afloat? We currently have a disposal bin in the facility to aid with the removal of craft that are at the end of their serviceable life. To help recover the cost of the service there is an associated fee for each type of vessel being removed. Come see the office for more information.

Action Required – Park Board to Remove Lifeguards From Five of Ten Beaches This Summer

This may not be a common sight at some Vancouver beaches this summer. Photo: Erik Price

Faced with a challenging budgetary situation, Vancouver Park Board staff have decided to remove beach lifeguards from Spanish Banks West, Spanish Banks East, Third Beach, Sunset Beach and Trout Lake this summer, and are planning on redeploying some of these resources to the outdoor pool system.

Lifeguards are trained professionals who educate the public, prevent accidents, respond to emergencies and save lives. The Lifesaving Society of BC reports that 99% of drownings occur at unsupervised beaches. The implications of leaving a significant portion of Vancouver’s beaches unsupervised are clear. Add the factor of alcohol permitted on Spanish Banks beaches and the potential loss of life seems more than probable.

While the Jericho Sailing Centre and other organizations have already gone on record with concerns over this decision, an earnest and significant public response is needed to convince the Vancouver Park Board to reconsider before beach and outdoor pool season starts in May. If you wish to voice your concerns write to your Park Board Commissioners and/or take the time to sign this petition.

Boaters’ Handbook: Your go-to guide for safe navigation within the Port of Vancouver

Navigating Vancouver’s busy harbour in recreational craft just is now safer and easier thanks to the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s new Boaters’ Handbook. The handbook is the ultimate reference—and a one-stop shop—for essential safety information, from how to operate within confined and restrictive waterways, to the radio channels to monitor and speed limits to follow throughout the port authority’s jurisdiction. Whether you’re boating or paddling in Burrard Inlet or the Fraser River, the Boaters’ handbook is your go-to to stay safe, informed, and enjoy your time on the water.

English Bay Safety Seminar

Never take water safety for granted

Jericho Sailing Centre users share Vancouver’s largest playground with Canada’s busiest port and are required to know and exercise the “rules of the road” while recreating in this area. Users should be aware of shipping lanes, ships transiting between the lanes and anchorages, and Traffic Control Zones. All non-commercial vessels shall stay well clear of commercial vessels including ships at anchor.

Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? The English Bay Safety Seminar was developed to help keep Jericho users safe while at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of “sea disasters” over the past 50 years.

Traffic Control Zone 1 Around First Narrows is a Jericho Style Craft No-Go Zone.

The area in yellow on the chart above, including the inset area in light green, is an official no-go zone for Jericho style craft.

Safety Notice to all non-motor power craft users in Vancouver

“All pleasure craft and sailing vessels must be under mechanical power when transiting through the First

Narrows traffic control zone. It is prohibited to enter or transit through the First Narrows traffic control zone on board a personal watercraft, including jet skis and non-motorized vessels, such as sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards.

Jericho Sailing Centre Etiquette

Common courtesy goes a long way towards making sure that everyone’s experience at the Jericho Sailing Centre is a positive one. Remember swimming is prohibited from the beach between the pier and the rock groyne East of ramp 4, dollies need to be returned to their spots after launching, and high traffic areas such as hosing stations must be made available for other users immediately after use. Whether you are new to our facility or a life-long user, it is a good idea to review common etiquette here on our blog.

On the Water-Safety is Your Responsibility

On the ocean there are elements of risk that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Regardless of how you decide to use the ocean always show courtesy to others. Please adhere to the code listed below and share with others the responsibility for a safe ocean experience

It is every member’s responsibility to know and observe the rules of the road when on or near the water. Click through for some key rules which every Jericho member must know and practice.
