Safety Notice – Low Water Level Hazard

The above image is the area between ramps 3 and 4 at close to a zero tide. In the red oval is the top of a concrete wall that is coming through the sand on either side of ramp 3. The red arrows are pointing at an old wooden wall and pilings, both treated with creosote. The wood is breaking down over time and the tops of these are sharp. These hazards are considered dangerous at tide levels under 4 feet or 1.22 meters.
Upcoming Low Water Levels (<4′) of concern:

Stage 3 Water Restrictions in effect Monday June 8

Metro Vancouver moves to Stage 3 water restrictions starting Monday June 8. Here’s what that means at the Jericho Sailing Centre:
- No washing of boats or equipment. Hose stations will be disabled or will have limited access. A salt water rinse in the ocean and/or a wipe down with a cloth or towel are good ways to clean sand off your craft after your ocean recreation session.
- Minimal water usage for safety/operations. Coaching, safety, and rescue craft may use limited water strictly for engine flushing or safety-critical maintenance. Our school partners will be using tubs of water for rinsing wetsuits. We will continue to power wash the ramps to keep them safe.
How you can help
- Plan for dry cleaning methods where possible using towels or rags.
- Report leaks immediately. If you see any running taps, leaking connections, or unauthorized hose use, notify the office.
We’ll update you when restrictions change. Thanks for doing your part to conserve water and keep our community compliant.
Transport Canada Interim Order for the Protection of the Southern Resident Killer Whale 2026

This windsurfer might be closer than the 200m exclusion zone for orcas. If mammals do swim towards you, simply stop your craft and let them swim past.
Transport Canada has issued new rules around boating near mammals in our local waters. A vessel must not approach within 1000m of a Southern Resident killer whale.
Minimum approach distances around other marine mammals in local waters:
All other orcas: 200m
Resting whales or calves: 200m
Other whales, dolphins & porpoises: 100m
More information about the laws and regulations around approaching marine mammals in Canada is available here.

English Bay Safety Seminar – In Person Monday July 6
Never take water safety for granted
Jericho Sailing Centre users share Vancouver’s largest playground with Canada’s busiest port and are required to know and exercise the “rules of the road” while recreating in this area. Users should be aware of shipping lanes, ships transiting between the lanes and anchorages, and Traffic Control Zones. All non-commercial vessels shall stay well clear of commercial vessels including ships at anchor.
Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? The English Bay Safety Seminar helps keep Jericho users safe while at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of “sea disasters” over the past 50 years.
Sail the Slideshow on our Website or RSVP with the JSCA office to attend our in-person seminar on Monday July 6 at 1900H.For more Safe Boating information check out Transport Canada’s Safe Boating Guide
Traffic Control Zone 1 Around First Narrows is a Jericho Style Craft No-Go Zone.

Safety Notice to all non-motor power craft users in Vancouver
“All pleasure craft and sailing vessels must be under mechanical power when transiting through the First
Narrows traffic control zone. It is prohibited to enter or transit through the First Narrows traffic control zone on board a personal watercraft, including jet skis and non-motorized vessels, such as sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards.“

Jericho Sailing Centre Etiquette

Common courtesy goes a long way towards making sure that everyone’s experience at the Jericho Sailing Centre is a positive one. Remember swimming is prohibited from the beach between the pier and the rock groyne East of ramp 4, dollies need to be returned to their spots after launching, and high traffic areas such as hosing stations must be made available for other users immediately after use. Whether you are new to our facility or a life-long user, it is a good idea to review common etiquette here on our blog.
On the Water-Safety is Your Responsibility

On the ocean there are elements of risk that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Regardless of how you decide to use the ocean always show courtesy to others. Please adhere to the code listed below and share with others the responsibility for a safe ocean experience
