Share the Shore
The beach in front of the Jericho Sailing Centre looks big from the air, but it can fill up fast. Please remember that the water inside the can buoy line, the beach, ramps and plaza are busy places. Minimizing the time your craft and dollies spend in these areas makes it easier for other members of our community to access our ocean playground.
As summer moves along and our launching beaches get busier with sailors, paddlers, lessons, and members of the public, we’d like to share a few friendly reminders to help everyone enjoy the shoreline safely:
- Launch dollies should not be left on the beach. Yellow JSCA launch dollies must be promptly returned to the fence directly after launching and recovery.
- The area south of the orange can buoys is a slow zone, so please keep your speed under 5 kts when launching or returning to shore.
- Please watch for people and craft along the shoreline when launching or coming back in, and give everyone plenty of space.
- For everyone’s safety, swimming or wading on the beaches in front of the Centre is not permitted and can be especially risky for small children.
- Please keep ramps and nearby areas clear for launching and retrieving craft, and avoid rigging, repairing, or waiting in these spaces.
- Please avoid leaving your craft on the shoreline for extended periods so others have room to launch and retrieve safely.

T100 Triathlon Vancouver at Jericho Aug 15 – 16, 2026
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, the Jericho Sailing Centre will be hosting the T100 triathlon during the weekend of August 15-16. Access to the parking lot directly to the south will be restricted in the mornings but alternative arrangements have been made.
Access to NW Marine Drive at 4th Ave (and subsequently Discovery St and our parking lot) will be closed during the following hours:
Saturday August 15 0500H-1000H
Sunday August 16 0500H-1200H
Parking in the Jericho East parking lot (near the Jericho Beach lifeguard station) will be available to users of the Jericho Sailing Centre with regular golf cart shuttles to our facility for morning access.
Foyer Digital Information Display Now Includes Anticipated Freighter Movements
The information screen in the Jericho Sailing Centre foyer now includes anticipated incoming and outgoing deep sea traffic to and from the English Bay southern anchorages as published by the pilot schedule here. This information is only a guide. Unanticipated vessel movement occurs. Departure and arrival times and anchorage assignments are not always available and subject to change. Remember all mariners are required to keep a continuous watch for other vessels while on the water. And it is the responsibility of recreational boaters to keep well clear of commercial traffic.
Safety Notice – Low Water Level Hazard
Users of the Jericho Sailing Centre should be aware of hazardous wharf remnants protruding from the seabed in the areas shown below in red between ramps 2 and 3. At 0′ tide they are just under the sea surface. Any time the water level is below 4′ users should proceed through this area with extreme caution.
At tide levels below 4 feet (1.22 m), several hazards become exposed between Ramps 3 and 4, including a concrete wall emerging from the sand near Ramp 3 and remnants of old creosote-treated wooden walls and pilings. These deteriorating structures can have sharp edges and should be avoided.

Foiler Alert!
Foiling Craft at Jericho can draw more than 1m (3.3′) of water when they are not foiling and we recommend launching between Ramps 2 & 3.

New UV Shirts and Neck Gaiters Available at the JSCA Office
Stay stylish and limit your exposure to UV with our new Jericho branded long sleeved UV shirts and neck gaiters. The shirt features a selection of our sports as verbs with corresponding icons. The gaiters are two sided and feature many Jericho style craft against the Vancouver skyline. Both are available for purchase at the JSCA office.
Beach Alert Jr. Lifeguard Camp
The Vancouver Lifeguard Association is pleased to bring back the Beach Alert Program!
Lifesaving and First Aid training combined with Paddle Board and Kayak experience
Children 8-15 years old who can swim 50m will see their swimming and fitness improve combined with lifesaving and water safety training.

All three schools at the Jericho Sailing Centre are open to the general public for rentals, lessons, season’s pass and youth camps.
Jericho Beach Kayak

MacSailing

Steer Clear of the Pier
Avoid entanglement by keeping north and east of orange and white can buoys
Jericho Pier is Vancouver’s only shore-based fishing and crabbing spot in English Bay, making it a busy place for crabbers, anglers and their gear. While fishing and crabbing are now restricted from the east side of the pier, crab traps and nearly invisible monofilament fishing lines can still easily snag an unsuspecting sailor, paddler, foiler or their gear.
The orange and white can buoys mark a safe buffer around the pier. When passing through the area, stay north and east of the buoys to avoid getting caught on a line.
Give the pier a wide berth and keep your voyage from becoming the one that got away

Water Restrictions – Stage 2 in effect
Thanks to everyone for helping us navigate the fluctuating water restrictions. Your cooperation is making a real difference. Metro Vancouver continues to be under water restrictions. Under Stage 2 water restrictions boat washing with automatic shut off nozzles is allowed.
Hose stations are functioning as per the norm. Please remember to shut the water off at the tap when done with a hose. This prevents leaks and damage to the hoses themselves.
We ask that you continue to be conservative with your water use. You can help by reporting leaks promptly, turning taps off completely when not in use, and using water thoughtfully whenever it is needed.
Thank you for doing your part to conserve water and keeping our community compliant. We appreciate everyone’s flexibility and cooperation and will provide updates as restrictions evolve.

English Bay Safety Seminar
Never take water safety for granted
Jericho Sailing Centre users share Vancouver’s largest playground with Canada’s busiest port and are required to know and exercise the “rules of the road” while recreating in this area. Users should be aware of shipping lanes, ships transiting between the lanes and anchorages, and Traffic Control Zones. All non-commercial vessels shall stay well clear of commercial vessels including ships at anchor.
Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? The English Bay Safety Seminar helps keep Jericho users safe while at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of “sea disasters” over the past 50 years.

Transport Canada Interim Order for the Protection of the Southern Resident Killer Whale 2026
Transport Canada has published rules around boating near mammals in our local waters. A vessel must not approach within 1000m of a Southern Resident killer whale.
Minimum approach distances around other marine mammals in local waters:
All other orcas: 200m
Resting whales or calves: 200m
Other whales, dolphins & porpoises: 100m

Traffic Control Zone 1 Around First Narrows is a Jericho Style Craft No-Go Zone.
The area in yellow on the chart above, including the inset area in light green, is an official no-go zone for Jericho style craft.
Safety Notice to all non-motor power craft users in Vancouver
“All pleasure craft and sailing vessels must be under mechanical power when transiting through the First
Narrows traffic control zone. It is prohibited to enter or transit through the First Narrows traffic control zone on board a personal watercraft, including jet skis and non-motorized vessels, such as sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards.” – Boater’s Handbook the essentials of informed navigation within the Port of Vancouver
