Fall is Here – The Longboats are Back!
UBC Rec will be running Day of the Longboat at the Jericho Sailing Centre again this year. The practice weekend is Sept. 26-27, with the main event sailing in on Oct. 3-4.
This year’s event is sold out with over 470 teams registered, meaning Day of the Longboat will bring together well over 4,000 participants from UBC and the community to paddle ten-person voyageur canoes in competitive and just-for-fun classes. For many, it’s their first experience recreating on the ocean – which means plenty of paddling, splashing, and opportunities to test the waters.
Not participating? No need to get in the same boat. Take in the action from the patio with a meal or beverage. It’s a great vantage point to sea who sinks, who swims, and who just keeps paddling. We’re shore you’ll enjoy it.

CURRENT JERICHO PAY PARKING PASSES EXPIRE SEPTEMBER 30
Current Seasonal Parking Passes expire on September 30. Seasonal passes for the next period October 1- March 31 are available from EasyPark via their email: mp@easypark.ca , with the subject ”Jericho Seasonal Pass Lot 69”; in the email body include: your full name, phone number, licence plate, make and model of the vehicle.
All net parking revenues go to the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation to allow them to fund park amenities.
SAFETY NOTICE: Wind Shuts Off Abruptly
During fair weather periods at this time of year the wind frequently shuts down abruptly within an hour of sunset. If you are on a wind powered craft this means you have just run out of power. The general rule of thumb for sailors is: never sail further away from home port than you would care to paddle within that hour; and… always carry a paddle.

Notice of Annual General Meeting
Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 1900H
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association’s 53rd Annual General Meeting will be held Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 1900H in the English Bay Room of the Jericho Sailing Centre and online. The 2025/2026 JSCA Board and Committees will report on their accomplishments this past year and the challenges for the future. Please plan to attend and participate in the future direction of your ocean access community centre.
Call for Nominations
Voting will take place to elect seven members for a two-year term to our 15 member Board of Directors. The JSCA Board meets regularly to set policy and determine Jericho’s direction. Interested members who have time and expertise to offer are invited to submit a letter indicating their experience and areas of interest to the JSCA Nominations Committee c/o the Jericho office no later than 1700H, Tuesday, October 13. Schools Shifting to Off-Season Schedules Later This Week
All three schools at the Jericho Sailing Centre are winding down to off season staffing in the coming days. Some programmes/rentals may still be available by appointment. Reach out for details.
Jericho Beach Kayak Rentals still available until Sunday September 27. Offseason offerings include group paddles in kayaks and surf skis on weekends as well as trip planning, and marine VHF radio courses. For bookings and more information, paddle over to the Jericho Beach Kayak website.
MacSailing Learn-to-sail and canoeing lessons as well as tours. Reach over to the MacSailing website for more information.
Windsure Rentals and lessons for windsurfing, windsurf foiling, winging, wing foiling, stand-up paddling and skimboarding are available until Friday September 25. Surf on over to Windsure’s website for more information.
Galley Patio and Grill – Open to the Public This Week
Open to the public. Enjoy the new windproof umbrellas (rated to 40kts / 70km/hr!) expanded ice cream selection, salad, burger or fish tacos and a refreshing beverage on the patio with the best view of Vancouver in Vancouver.
Past this weekend, the Galley will be open weekends only weather depending.

Winter Paddling: 2h paddle Saturdays and select Sundays from 10am-12pm
Join Jericho Beach Kayak throughout the winter to go paddling, connect with other kayakers, and enjoy a beautiful paddle.
Whether you are new to kayaking or an experienced paddler who wants the company of others we will ensure it will be a great experience. Registration is required.

Sharing the Shore
Our launching beaches are busy with sailors, paddlers, lessons, and members of the public. A little common courtesy goes a long way toward keeping the shoreline safe and enjoyable for everyone.
A few friendly reminders:
- Yellow JSCA launch dollies should be returned to the fence promptly after launching or recovery.
- The area south of the orange can buoys is a slow zone—please keep your speed below 5 knots.
- Watch for people and craft along the shoreline and give everyone plenty of room.
- Swimming and wading on the beaches in front of the Centre is not permitted.
- Please keep ramps, hosing stations, and other high-traffic areas clear and available for others immediately after use.
- Avoid rigging, repairs, or leaving craft on the shoreline for extended periods where they may interfere with launching and retrieval.

Steer Clear of the Pier
Avoid entanglement by keeping north and east of orange and white can buoys
Jericho Pier is Vancouver’s only shore-based fishing and crabbing spot in English Bay, making it a busy place for crabbers, anglers and their gear. While fishing and crabbing are now restricted from the east side of the pier, crab traps and nearly invisible monofilament fishing lines can still easily snag an unsuspecting sailor, paddler, foiler or their gear from the north and west sides.
The orange and white can buoys mark a safe buffer around the pier. When passing through the area, stay north and east of the buoys to avoid getting caught on a line.
Give the pier a wide berth and keep your voyage from becoming the one that got away.
Water Restrictions – Reduced to Stage 1
Thanks to everyone for helping us navigate the fluctuating water restrictions. Your cooperation is making a real difference. Metro Vancouver continues to be under water restrictions. Under Stage 1 water restrictions boat washing is allowed.
Hose stations are functioning as per the norm. Please remember to shut the water off at the tap when done with a hose. This prevents leaks and damage to the hoses themselves.
We ask that you continue to be conservative with your water use. You can help by reporting leaks promptly, turning taps off completely when not in use, and using water thoughtfully whenever it is needed.

English Bay Safety Seminar
Never take water safety for granted
Jericho Sailing Centre users share Vancouver’s largest playground with Canada’s busiest port and are required to know and exercise the “rules of the road” while recreating in this area. Users should be aware of shipping lanes, ships transiting between the lanes and anchorages, and Traffic Control Zones. All non-commercial vessels shall stay well clear of commercial vessels including ships at anchor.
Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? The English Bay Safety Seminar helps keep Jericho users safe while at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of “sea disasters” over the past 50 years.

Transport Canada Interim Order for the Protection of the Southern Resident Killer Whale 2026
Transport Canada has published rules around boating near mammals in our local waters. A vessel must not approach within 1000m of a Southern Resident killer whale.

Traffic Control Zone 1 Around First Narrows is a Jericho Style Craft No-Go Zone
The area in yellow on the chart above, including the inset area in light green, is an official no-go zone for Jericho style craft.
Safety Notice to all non-motor power craft users in Vancouver
“All pleasure craft and sailing vessels must be under mechanical power when transiting through the First Narrows traffic control zone. It is prohibited to enter or transit through the First Narrows traffic control zone on board a personal watercraft, including jet skis and non-motorized vessels, such as sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards.”
